November Songs (2018)

347b079c06873b34a2759eca2b23c583

So… remember how I said I’d start posting every Saturday and that I’ll do my best to post more often? Yeah, that obviously didn’t work. To be fair, things have been super hectic lately. School has been taking up all of my time and I haven’t had time to come up with ideas for this blog, let alone write for it.

Anyway, thankfully I just finished another assignment and since I like music a lot and these posts are easy to write, I thought I’d type it up and put it up as soon as I’m done. This month has been super busy and hectic so of course, me being me I listened to a lot of music, most of which you can find on my Spotify since I won’t be able to add all of it here otherwise this post would be too long and really slow to load. So, this month of November I’ve been listening to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina soundtrack as well as a bunch of BTS and other Kpop songs I hear on those Lofi study playlists. I will do my best to explain why some of the songs are so addicting but I won’t do that for all of them.

So, without further ado, here’s my November playlist.

Cliff Richard – Devil Woman

This song was so hard not to love (I tried, it’s generally not my type of music) but it’s so damn catchy and the whole witchy vibe it has going on fits the whole end of Autumn aesthetic I love so much.

K.Flay – Blood in The Cut

Literally just a catchy, repetitive song.

Fallulah – Give Us a Little Love

I love the vocals in this song, they’re very soothing so whenever I’m having trouble understanding something or working through an assignment I put this song on and it’s an instant reaction.

VCTRY – Black Magic Woman

I love the whole vibe of this song, once again, very witchy and spooky and I love listening to this song before going to bed or on my commute in the morning.

Billie Eilish – Belly Ache

I mean, it’s Billie Eilish, there’s not much to say here. Her entire discography is pure gold from the metaphors she uses to her unique voice and the catchy tunes.

BTS – Magic Shop

I’ve been listening to this song on repeat during the entirety of this month, mostly for comfort. Call me lame all you want but listening to BTS makes everything feel just a little better for me.

The Rose – I.L.Y

Usually, I don’t like songs that revolve around the phrase ‘I love you’ because I find them a bit cringy but The Rose is a major exception to this rule. Not only did they make an amazing song, like they usually do, but that whole chorus is just so soothing and Woosung’s vocals slay me every damn time.

CHUNGHA – Remind of You

Chungha’s music has slowly become a big part of my daily life. Her vocals and her overall sound fits every mood.

HEIZE – Wind

I love listening to this album whenever I’m feeling down or just upset. It’s such a good, slow pick-me-up album.

BigBang – This Love

I mean, it’s old BigBang. This song is the definition of comforting music.

So this is it, please make sure to check out my last post and have a good day!

With love,

Favourite TV Shows and Series

tumblr_mkv2epOkdC1qgwqw9o1_500.gif

I am that person who watches way too many TV shows. As I mentioned in my ‘using youtube as an escape’ blog post, I use media as a form of escapism. It helps me block out my thoughts, worries and anxieties and problems. I don’t even remember most of my breakups (not that I had many) because I just occupy my mind with TV shows. I’m not saying this is a good thing nor am I saying I’m content with it, I am trying to change this (says the person who watched 14 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy during exam season).

Not too long ago I realized that I’m not a big fan of sci-fi, paranormal shows. I have watched Supernatural (in my mind it ended at season 4) and Shadowhunters (I got bored of it real quick, Malec still has my heart though) but I prefer more realistic shows. I think the craziest TV binge I ever did was when I started watching Pretty Little Liars. I stayed awake for three days straight watching it over winter break and then finished the first five seasons in a week or so. Once again, in my mind, PLL finished at season 5.

When-Meredith-Just-Cant-Anymore-Neither-Can-You.gif

My number one favourite TV show as of now has to be Grey’s Anatomy. That’s all I’ve been talking about for the past 5 months or so and I am SO happy that season 15 is out now. I’ve even roped in a couple of friends which is my way of bonding with people (yeah, I know, I sound like a fun person). As I was planning for this post, I was thinking about why I love this show so much and I realized that I’m not entirely sure. If you don’t know what Grey’s Anatomy is about, it’s a medical show revolving around Meredith Grey who is a monumental screw-up and Derek Shepherd who is McDreamy and a bit of a McAss sometimes.

I know, this is not exactly selling the show but this might. I think the reason why I love this show so much is because of the characters. It has such a diverse cast, lgbtq+ characters including bisexual girls, trans men and their stories don’t always revolve around their sexualities. We also have people with disabilities and we get to see the struggle as well as them pulling through and dealing with their disability. Their social commentary is amazing too, Grey’s Anatomy has dealt with heavy topics such as shootings, addiction, depression, not fitting in because of one’s sexuality or gender identity, loss of a loved one and so much more. The show is so long and has evolved so well from its release back in 2005 to today in 2018. The story has evolved as did the characters and even though things changed, the show is still so fun to watch.

tumblr_nzot1bxCHC1s02w85o1_500

My second favourite TV show is Dexter. This is another show I binge-watched in a couple of days, maybe a week. I have actually watched Dexter over thirty times to date and I don’t regret it at all! I can blindly pick a random episode of a random season and know exactly what happens before and after said episode. What’s Dexter about? Dexter is a blood spatter analyst at Miami Metro Homicide. He was adopted into the Morgan family as a very young child and as he was growing up, he noticed he had ‘urges’. His adoptive father who was a homicide detective taught him the code to kill serial killers. Now, if you ask me why I’m so damn obsessed with this show, I’m not entirely sure. I don’t mind bad characters when they’re done right and Dexter was written so freaking well that sometimes you forget that he’s a serial killer. This show is so morally wrong that it’s actually incredibly interesting to dissect because it gives a personal insight into the mind of a monster who kills other monsters, we get to love his family and friends, we get invested in the story and soon enough forget he’s a monster and – whoop, he killed someone. It’s a crazy rollercoaster of emotions.

giphy (3)

My third favourite TV show is Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Now mind you, this show is very explicit and not for younger viewers at all so if you do check it out, do it at your own risk and preferably only if you’re over the age of 18. Diary of a Call Girl is a TV show made after a book written by a former call girl (high-class escort). It’s a funny, real and sexy show that portrays the life of Hannah Baxter, a 27-year-old who goes by the name Belle. She lives a luxurious double life that gets a little messy when people in her life start finding out that she’s an escort. This show is relatively short, only 4 seasons, but it’s packed full of funny moments, sad moments, sexy moments. People usually watch Gilmore Girls when they want to feel cosy or they want something easy to watch after a long tiring day, for me that show is Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Not only did I love the books, but I also love the TV show too.

So here it is, a list of my favourite TV show. I know it’s quite long, especially the Grey’s Anatomy paragraphs but I hope you enjoyed reading it nonetheless, and that maybe it gave you an idea of what to watch next. Thanks a lot for reading and make sure to check out my last blog post which is my favourite Chase Atlantic songs.

Halloween Movies

giphy (1)

I’m not really a movie person, I do enjoy a good movie especially at the cinema but I don’t really go out of my way to watch movies. Instead, I watch a ton of TV shows! I genuinely think it’s because I have a hard time parting from the characters after only two hours. So because I’m not a big movie person, I decided to do something about that – I want to be a movie connoisseur and what better way to become one than to watch a bunch of Halloween movies?

Now mind you, Halloween is not very big in the UK. We have that small Halloween corner in supermarkets and most people don’t open their doors to trick-or-treaters (not that there are many of those either) but the spooky atmosphere is still there if you strive for it, which I am.

Without further ado, here is my list of Halloween movies for the month of October!

Hocus Pocus

30382691972_7fd209598e_b

This movie is a yearly must watch for me. I love the soundtrack, the characters and the overall vibe of this movie because it puts me in such a cosy, fall mood!

Casper

MV5BZThhYTlhMDUtMDhjZi00MTljLTkwMDYtOGU3ZjVlMWE4NDk4XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_UY268_CR5,0,182,268_AL_

This is one of the movies that I vaguely remember watching but not really? So I want to (re)watch it this October just to see what it’s about and if I did actually watch it in the past.

Twitches

Twitches

This was my favourite Halloween Disney movie! I loved the characters and the whole, magical world and so I would like to relive those days.

Corpse Bride

corpse_bride_by_02nforshew

I think we can all agree that Tim Burton makes amazing movies, and Corpse Bride is one of those movies. I watched this back when I was 11 and I fell in love with the story and the aesthetic! My wannabe emo self loved this movie.

Nightmare Before Christmas

71UvWgIQNiL._SY606_

I mean, of course, this movie would be on this list. I can actually sing (very badly) every word to This is Halloween, that’s how obsessed I’ve been with this movie!

Harry Potter

49684002_3890beba97

I am one of those people who hasn’t actually watched the Harry Potter movies. I’m pretty sure I watched the first one and the eighth one and since I love the books so much, I think it’s time that I give the movies a try too!

The Addams Family

download

Oh boy, I could talk about The Addams Family for years and years and not get bored. I watched the cartoon growing up and then I began watching the movies and I would really like to revisit the movies this October. Plus I have the biggest crush on Morticia.

Ghost Ship

MV5BMTM3NTA4NDIwMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNTc4NDE3._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

I actually watched this movie for the first time this year and I completely loved it, despite the obviously low budget, slightly weird characters and cheap scare tactics. I really think I liked it solely because of the soundtrack, the cheap scare tactics and the ending.

Carrie

MV5BODg2MDU2MjYxNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDQ5MzU0OQ@@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

I vaguely remember watching this movie at a sleepover back when I was a teenager but since I only remember that one gruesome part, I would like to rewatch it again this month.

Scream

41CoMxcuICL._SX342_

Another one of those movies I watched at a sleepover when I was thirteen or fourteen years old that I would like to watch again.

So here it is, my list of Halloween movies! I was going to add The Grudge to this list but I value my sleep so better not. What are your favourite autumn/Halloween movies? Thanks a lot for reading and make sure to check out my last blog post which is my September playlist!

Worst TV/Literature Tropes

trope (n)

1 A figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression.

‘both clothes and illness became tropes for new attitudes toward the self’
‘my sense that philosophy has become barren is a recurrent trope of modern philosophy’
‘perhaps it is a mistake to use tropes and parallels in this eminently unpoetic age’
1.1 A significant or recurrent theme; a motif.
‘she uses the Eucharist as a pictorial trope’ Source

As we have already established, I am a big book person. I love books, I love reading and I love ingesting stories. It’s a form of escapism for me. I feel the same way about TV shows – I get to know unique characters that I can relate to or learn from, I get to understand someone else’s mind and how they work as a person through the way they wrote the book/script for the TV show. I just love it.

What I don’t love, is when that source of escapism is tainted by bad tropes. It ruins everything, the stories, the characters and the entire universe that has been built. I think that’s definitely one of the reasons why I’m so picky with the way I consume any type of media. I’m selective about the books I read, I never liked those cheesy romance novels, about the shows I watch (I don’t like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones) and I even do that with anime! I’m so particular about the things I don’t like because it helps me pick and choose what to spend my time on (and my energy, let’s be honest).

The first trope I hate is the best friends turned lovers trope. I hate how unrealistic it is, how it doesn’t let our main girl, because let’s be honest, it’s usually the girl who ends up crawling back to her childhood best friend, grow into the person she can be. I believe this trope is a comfortable way for an author to write a novel which a lot of people will enjoy. It’s all about comfort, about being secure and not stepping out of the comfort zone. People find it easier to digest a story about a girl who’s infatuated with two boys but in the end chooses the childhood best friend because it’s easy. She doesn’t have to get to know this new guy, she doesn’t have to see if it’s going to work or not because it’s safer to go with the comfortable choice, even though that choice might not be a good one. Urgh, this trope pisses me off so much that I could write an entire essay about it.

The second trope that I hate is diversity for the sake of diversity. We are in 2018, we live in a *mostly* diverse world, in a global world, but some authors still choose to stick to one type of character (the white cis heterosexual male/female). When they do choose to write diverse characters, they don’t write them because these characters are just that, humans experiencing the contents of the plot, but because that’s what’s expected in 2018. I really dislike this because even though it is 2018, a lot of people still can’t relate to the characters they read about/watch on screen. Everyone wants to feel represented, to feel heard, to not feel invisible. And so when so many books and TV shows attempt to be diverse, it almost always comes across as disingenuous. These diverse characters never get a normal plot of their own, their stories almost always revolve around their diversity. The LGBTQ+ character’s story is almost always about their struggle as an LGBTQ+ character, they’re rarely just people with a different sexual preference. This trope is so disappointing, even though we are making a lot of good progress, it’s really not enough.

The third trope I hate is the 1000-year-old monster dating a 17-year-old girl. I have to preface this by saying that I have read these types of books and I have watched TV shows that revolve around this trope (Twilight, Vampire Diaries) and came to find this trope creepy. I understand why it’s the way it is. People are dreamers, they want the impossible, they want to feel unique and adventurous and what’s more adventurous than vampires and beasts and zombies? The part that I don’t understand is, why do they have to be so damn old? How is it normal for a 200-year-old vampire to pursue a high school girl? Would people be alright with this trope if the love interest wasn’t a vampire and was just a plain old guy? Of course they wouldn’t because it’s gross! Just because the 200-year-old vampire looks like a 25-year-old student, it doesn’t make the situation better – it makes it worse.

Lastly, I hate the plain-jane trope. Writing characters for the sake of relatability is such an overused trope, especially in YA, that I can’t even begin to describe how much I hate it. It doesn’t necessarily stop me from reading the novel because when it happens I tend to focus on the story rather than the character, but at the same time, I believe that a story is incomplete without a good, well-rounded character. Women are always written either as the blonde bimbo who sleeps around a lot, the geeky girl or simply, with no personality because it allows people to insert themselves into the story. If the author writes a story where the main character is very detailed and real, people who haven’t found themselves yet cannot relate therefore the book doesn’t sell. It’s as simple as that. The male characters don’t get it any easier though. It’s always the nice guy who’s not really nice, the geeky guy who can’t get the hot girl and when he does he doesn’t change at all (but when the geeky girl gets the popular guy she has to change completely) or the mindless hunk who can get any girl but somehow falls in love with the geeky girl.

While I don’t like these tropes (and many others, I might make a second post), it doesn’t mean you can’t like them. Everyone views the world differently and everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, their own likes and dislikes and I respect that!

I hope you enjoyed this long, ranty blog post. Feel free to tell me all about the tropes you hate or love. Thanks for reading and make sure to read my last blog post which is a list of my favourite BTS songs.

Top 7 Songs: BTS + Solos

BTS_at_the_31st_Golden_Disk_Awards

As I have mentioned in one of my earlier posts about kpop, one of my favourite groups at the moment is BTS. BTS has had such amazing success both in their home country and abroad which I find very impressive. Not many groups have been able to break into the international market and stay there for as long as BTS has. Personally, I like BTS’ more upbeat songs and I think my favourite album of theirs is WINGS so you’ll see a lot of that in this post. I think the reason why I decided to do this is 1 because I wanted to share my love for BTS and their amazing discography and 2 because I think it would be cool if I could show some people who maybe don’t know much about kpop or BTS, some awesome songs!

Without further ado, here are my seven favourite songs from BTS, including their solo songs!

BTS – Coffee

J-hope – Mama

BTS – Spring Day

Jimin – Serendipity

BTS – Mic Drop Remix ft Desiigner

Jungkook – Euphoria

BTS – Not Today

Bonus

V – Stigma

BTS – Dimple

Jungkook – Begin

So here it is, my top seven BTS songs! Thanks a lot for reading and feel free to let me know what your favourite songs are and also check out my last blog post which is my to-do list for my second year of university.

Hogwarts Houses Study Tips: Hufflepuff

hufflepuff3

The third part of my Hogwarts Houses Study Tips is all about helping hufflepuffs finding different and maybe even better ways of studying. This week I will be focusing less on study strategies such as ‘teach it to others’ and ‘ask for help’ and more on the reasons why some of us have a hard time concentrating on our studies. I think we can all agree that as students in this modern age, our attention span gets shorter and shorter as technology and social media gets better and better. I personally have days in which I sit down at my desk, ready to read a text from the 18th century and I just can’t seem to focus – or I focus for the first five minutes and then I suddenly catch myself staring at the wall and daydreaming about Sandra Oh. It’s not like I am underprepared, I have all my essentials right next to me – a notebook to jot down notes, coffee/water, snacks and my phone is far away on my bed. Still, I can’t concentrate.

I think people deal differently with this situation. Some of us get annoyed and take a nap, others persevere, maybe they even find ways to make the content fun and interesting. But I genuinely think that before we do any of that, we should come to terms with the reasons why we’re having such a hard time studying. Here are a couple of tips that might help with that.

Hufflepuff

hufflepuff1

Patience

Loyalty

Dedication

Kindness

Unafraid

Be patient and kind with yourself

hufflepuff2

You know how some older people tell us that our generation is lacking independence and focus? Well, don’t listen to them. Times are changing, society is evolving and technology has a very big impact on our day to day lives, even though we might not realize it at the moment. Back in the day, people had to buy newspapers to get their news, now it’s all at our fingertips. Back in the day research was done in libraries by reading tons of books, now it’s at the push of a button. Of course, we would find it harder to focus, we don’t have to sit down for hours just to accomplish one task. So be kind and patient with yourself, don’t stress too much and you will succeed.

Spend some time understanding why you’re having trouble

hufflepuff4

Instead of just diving into whatever you have to do or study, take some time to analyse the situation. Why do you lose focus so easily? What’s distracting you and how can you make sure you keep focused for as long as you need to. Naturally, our minds can only focus for twenty minutes before our minds start to wander. I personally found out that because of my very active imagination, I tend to slip into this land of daydreams whenever I lose focus. So instead of sitting down for hours, trying to concentrate on a subject that I might not even like, I study in bursts of 20 minutes and take 5-minute breaks in between. This way I can give into my wandering mind and keep focused for those 20 minutes.

Don’t be afraid of change

hufflepuff5

I wrote a blog post about how I stopped fearing change which you can read *here*. Change is such a natural phenomenon and it’s normal to be afraid of change because it means stepping out of our comfort zone. But change is essential to living a productive and active lifestyle – a life worth being proud of. If you really, really want to get that degree or become a doctor/lawyer/photographer/etc. then being a proactive learner is worth changing your habits for. Instead of resigning yourself to bad study sessions and going to class confused, take this opportunity to change the way you study and focus in order to achieve your dreams and your goals!

So here it is, the third part of my Hogwarts Houses Study Tips series. I hope these tips helped you understand and work through the frustrations of not being able to hunker down and learn. Thanks a lot for reading and make sure to check out my last blog post which is a list of my favourite kpop groups as well as the other parts in this series: Gryffindor and Ravenclaw!

My Favourite Kpop Groups

tumblr_inline_p6u4erEiYh1rm9spk_500

About a week ago I talked about my kpop journey and my kpop journal and how much I enjoy kpop. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I would want to write a list of my favourite kpop groups since I’m obviously a fan of Korean music and entertainment but to recap on the things I mentioned in my last post about kpop, I became a kpop fan in the spring of 2012 and have been an on and off fan ever since then. I started out with groups like BigBang and 2NE1 and although I am a soft stan (someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time streaming music videos and obsessing over comebacks) I very much enjoy this new generation of kpop groups – even though I will always prefer the second generation.

Here are a couple of my favourite groups, my bias and favourite song from each group.

SHINee

Shinee (/ˈʃaɪniː/ SHY-nee; Korean: 샤이니; Japanese: シャイニー; stylized as SHINee) is a South Korean boy band formed by SM Entertainment in 2008. The group is composed of four members: Onew, Key, Minho, and Taemin. Originally a five-piece group, vocalist Jonghyun died in December 2017. The group’s popularity in their native country has earned them numerous accolades and the title “Princes of K-pop” (Wikipedia)

Ah, SHINee… They truly are the princes of kpop! I fell in love with SHINee almost immediately after I fell in love with kpop as a whole. The first song I heard from them was Lucifer and then Ring Ding Dong which then led me to watch Hello Baby and the rest is history! My first bias was Taemin simply because of his long hair in Lucifer, then Minho because he was so sweet with the toddler from Hello Baby. Then my bias switched to Key because I really liked how he wasn’t ashamed to be a bit more feminine but ultimately, my heart really always belonged to Jonghyun (it still does today). As you’ve read from the quote I got from Wikipedia, Jonghyun died in December of 2017 which of course affected me in ways I cannot even begin to describe but what I do have to say about him is that he was always such a big part of my life, even if he didn’t know it. You know how when you’re a teenager and nobody really gets you and you’re moody and upset, you find solace in music or celebrities because they seem to understand? Jonghyun was that for me. His music was legendary and the way he stood up for minorities and his open-mindedness, well, I really truly believe that he shaped me into who I am today. To me, SHINee will forever be five.

Favourite song: SHINee – The Reason

BTS

BTS (Hangul: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band formed by Big Hit Entertainment. They debuted on June 12, 2013, with the song “No More Dream” from their first album 2 Cool 4 Skool. (Wikipedia)

I have to say that I pretty much watched BTS grow into the group they are today right from the beginning – not because I want to gloat or anything but because the more they gained popularity and confidence, the more I fell in love with them. At first, I didn’t really like their music, hip-hop is not necessarily my style although I do enjoy some songs here and there, as the years went by they began evolving and growing up. Their music changed, their creativity started showing through their lyrics, their music videos and their overall presence in the Korean music industry. As for my bias, well, it’s super hard for me to choose a bias in BTS for some reason. I love all of them equally even though sometimes I lean more towards one over the others.

My favourite song: BTS – Spine Breaker

Mamamoo

Mamamoo (Hangul: 마마무), sometimes stylized as MAMAMOO, is a South Korean girl group formed by RBW (formerly WA Entertainment) in 2014. The group officially debuted on June 19, 2014, with the single “Mr Ambiguous”. Their debut was considered by some critics as one of the best K-pop debuts of 2014. They are recognized for their retro, jazz, R&B concepts and strong vocal performances. (Wikipedia)

Uh, where do I begin? I am soo in love with Mamamoo. Their energy is absolutely insane and their vocals slay me every single time they open their mouths. I don’t even think there’s a member in Mamamoo that doesn’t have talent – they are all so genuinely amazing, it’s insane. I learnt about these queens from a friend back in college and although I liked their earlier songs, I am not a big jazz person but as they evolved, I started falling more and more for these four amazing ladies. I really recommend listening to their entire discography because it’s honestly a gold mine. As for my bias – Moonbyul really has my heart at the moment. I love how badass she is, her rapping always gets me and her singing voice is so unique, it’s amazing!

My favourite song: Mamamoo – Starry Night

So here it is, three of my favourite kpop groups as of now. Feel free to let me know what your opinions are on these three groups and what your favourite groups are! Hogwarts Houses Study Tips: Ravenclaw

Welcome to the second part of my Hogwarts Houses Study Tips series! This time, I am going to give you some studying tips and advice that relates to Ravenclaw. As I mentioned in the first instalment of this series, Harry Potter is still very much relevant in today’s society even though it’s a fiction story about a teenage wizard. A lot of people relate to the Hogwarts houses system and some people even base some of their decisions and beliefs based on that.

This list is not meant to come across as law – people are multidimensional which means that what works for one Ravenclaw might not work for another. (I realize that I’m taking this way too seriously but bare with me).

Without further ado, here are three Ravenclaw study tips.

Ravenclaw

Engaging

Helpful

Competitive

Talented

Productive

Teach it to others

Learning is a layered process for a lot of people. When we first learn something we add the first layer which we then revise and add the second layer. To really consolidate our learning, it’s useful to teach the knowledge we just acquired to others. Not only does it point out the parts we didn’t understand but it also forms mental cues through repetition.

Discuss

It’s easy to learn something from a book or a lecture and then dust our hands because it’s all done but just as we are multidimensional, the subjects we study are too. It’s worth studying subjects in depth, analysing and deepening our understanding not only because it helps secure those extra points in exams and projects but also because it builds confidence in our knowledge and our ability to listen to others with an open mind.

Quiz Yourself

This particular point doesn’t work for me but a lot of my friends swear by it. Quizzing yourself, whether by using apps or covering the answers with an object or your hand is useful because it lets you know whether you really understood the concept and it further consolidates your knowledge through repetition.

So here it is, three study tips for all you lovely Ravenclaws out there. Thanks a lot for reading and please make sure to check the first part of this series which is all about Gryffindor study tips as well as my last blog post which is about my kpop journal.

Kpop Journal

Screenshot_20180804-154119_VSCO

This weekend’s blog post is a bit more relaxed. In retrospect, I wanted to make a post about change and how change is inevitable so we might as well embrace it and make the best out of it, but after thinking about it and trying to script it out I decided against it. That blog post might come later next week instead. This weekend I am going to talk about my kpop journal and what it means to me. Granted, it’s not a blog post that takes too much brain power to read or write but it’s a fun one.
I started listening to kpop six years ago in April when a really good friend of mine sent me the link to her Tumblr. Now mind you, I didn’t even know what kpop was when I went on her page and saw thousands of colourful MV gifs. I clicked on one of the links and it took me to the song ‘Haru Haru’ by BigBang which made me realize that I listened to G-Dragon before that. So technically, my first kpop song was G-Dragon ‘Heartbreaker’ but I always tell people that it was BigBang’s ‘Haru Haru’. I then went on to check out 2NE1 and fell in love with their entire discography, I even watched 2NE1 TV and their appearances on Strong Heart. Then I fell in love with SHINee and the rest is history.
As a lot of people do, I fell in and out of love with kpop. First, it was because I still loved heavy metal and punk and as a child, I didn’t understand that I could love both kpop and rock at the same time. Then because the more social media became prevalent in the kpop industry the more the kpop I knew was changing and I didn’t like that. In fact, I hated how idols stopped being comfortable displaying affection towards one another, especially boy groups and girl groups and how fans couldn’t stop fighting over who was better. Then I learned about the really heavy stuff, the abuse that goes behind closed doors. This is not to say that kpop is bad, it’s not bad at all. These people singing and dancing and rapping on stage are just humans doing what they love most and are an inspiration for a lot of people.

That being said, I re-fell in love with kpop when ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ by BTS came out. I knew BTS since their debut and I always enjoyed their music but BS&T really did it for me. I spent my days and nights obsessing over kpop again because damn, everything just got better. The cinematography, the sets, the creativity, it just drew me in and I loved it. This, in turn, made me turn my studygram into a mixed account. I started posting pictures of my notes, my bullet journal and finally of my kpop journal.
What is a kpop journal? I didn’t really know either, I just saw all these amazing pictures on Instagram and fell in love with how colourful and pretty they all were so I decided that I would make one too. I watched videos about it and stalked every big kpop Instagrammer until I finally decided to buy my own journal and give it a try. Sure, mine didn’t look like those amazing pictures online but I had so much fun with it! I started doing birthday spreads and spreads about my favourite groups.
I don’t think this blog post has a moral or a message per say, maybe that we should be open to possibilities and always have fun trying new things. Anyway, thanks a lot for reading my rambles. Make sure to check out my last blog post which is my August TBR!

With love,

Hogwarts Houses Study Tips: Gryffindor

gryffindor1

Harry Potter culture is still very much alive and very strong in today’s society. Everyone knows which house they belong to, they know the house’s traits and strongly identify with them throughout their lives. I am not ashamed to say that I am totally one of those people, in fact, I even made my own Hogwarts house when I was younger.

I’m not entirely sure why we want to compartmentalise ourselves and put labels on ourselves based on a fictional world but I know that personally, I get a sense of comfort out of feeling like I have that one thing figured out. Since growing up and learning about ourselves, evolving and becoming different people, Hogwarts houses can become a bit of a safety net if we don’t actually know who we are.

Therefore, I came up with a way to incorporate my Hogwarts house (Slytherin) into my everyday life, or more like my everyday student life. Here is my first instalment of Hogwarts Houses Study Tips – Gryffindor edition.

Known as ‘do-ers’, kinesthetic learners retain information better by using a hands-on approach to short-term memory studying. To retain information for a long-term period, a multitude of different techniques could be used such as colourful note-taking, listening to a lecture/seminar, lab demonstrations, etc. This form of learning is useful for people who have a harder time focusing and for those who enjoy moving a lot and focus better that way.

Apply class knowledge to everyday life

By applying class knowledge to everyday life, it helps information stick better by creating mental cues through association (think about the Bone Dance from Hannah Montana). Using mental cues to constantly remind yourself of information that you have learnt in class is useful because it helps your brain repeat knowledge and thus remember things better.

Change up your study area from time to time

A different study environment is useful because the brain connects the information it’s being fed to the environment it is in. Letting our brains associate all information with the same room makes the information blend together. Therefore, some ideas for a change of scenery are coffee shops, school’s library or your local library, the park on nice sunny days or even different parts of your house. Maybe instead of always studying at your desk, you can study at the kitchen table instead.

Quick disclaimer: all the information I’m giving you guys is basically what I learnt from doing Psychology at A Levels so for proper, in-depth knowledge on some of the things I’m talking about you can just do a quick google search to find out more info.

So here it is. The first out of four blogs dedicated to study tips based on your Hogwarts house. As you can probably tell I took the words associated with Gryffindor and applied them to different study tips. Hope this post has been helpful in some sort of way! Also, make sure to check out my last post which is 7 organization skills that I find work for me.
